#FoodForClimate Social Media Challenge

Have you ever wondered how you can combat climate change through the food you eat? Starting Earth Week, 2022, the Bow Valley Climate Action Society (BVCA) and the Bow Valley Food Alliance (BVFA) have teamed up to bring you a digital Facebook challenge that will help you understand the climate impacts of our food while being entered to win local food prizes!

Between April 17th and April 30th, both BVCA and BVFA will be posting daily Food for Climate posts with resources about topics ranging from food production to food waste, exploring a new topic each day. Each post will include a question to answer in the comments section below, and for each daily contribution you make (up to 14 contributions), you will be entered into a draw to win one of three $100 gift cards to local restaurants working to reduce their carbon footprint. It’s that simple and fun!

This Challenge will explore questions such as:

  • What are the biggest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released as part of our food system?

  • What does ‘local food’ mean? What are ‘food miles’?

  • How can food waste be reduced? Why should we compost?

  • What initiatives in the Bow Valley help reduce GHGs from food and food waste?

  • What are some low-carbon food options in the Bow Valley?

  • How can food sovereignty and climate action be mutually reinforcing?

  • What actions can we take as individuals to make a difference?

So how can you participate? Watch the Bow Valley Climate Action Society and the Bow Valley Food AllianceFacebook pages between April 17th and April 30th for daily #FoodForClimate posts, which will have a resource and a reflection question. Answer the daily question in the comments section on either pages’ original post to be entered to win. There will be a new post and question each day, so follow along for more chances to win!

Participants must be a Bow Valley resident. A maximum of one entry per day and maximum one prize per person. Deadline to make comment entries on any post is 11:59pm MDT April 30th, 2022. Comments must be made on the original post of either the BVCA or BVFA. Draw for prizes will be held on May 1st, 2022. Winners will be contacted via Facebook Messenger. This challenge is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Instagram, Facebook, or Meta.

This challenge has been brought to you as part of Bow Valley Climate Action Society’s Envisioning & Preparing for our Low-Carbon Future Project, helping residents to clearly and confidently imagine what components of a low-carbon future could look like.
